What is an RSS feed?
What is an RSS feed?
An RSS 2.0 feed (Really Simple Syndication) is a format used to publish frequently updated information such as news headlines. Other names include "feed", "web feed" or "channel". A feed allows a user to keep up to date with information without needing to constantly check a web page for changes.

In order to use an RSS feed, you will need special software know as a "feed reader" or "aggregator".

A user subscribes to a feed by entering the address of the feed into the reader software, or by clicking the RSS icon RSS Icon on a web page, which initiates the subscription process.
What software can read an RSS feed?
There are several pieces of software available to read RSS feeds.

Popular Microsoft Windows RSS feed readers include:

- Internet Explorer 7 (requires Windows XP or Vista)
- Snarfer (requires Windows XP or Vista)
- Newzcrawler (requires Windows 98/NT/2000/Me/XP)

Popular Apple Macintosh RSS feed readers include:

- Safari RSS (included with Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger)
- NetNewsWire Lite (a free version of NetNewsWire - requires Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger)

In addition, Google provides a web based RSS feed reader called Google Reader.
